FAQs

Q What happens at Horsham Coder Dojo?

Small inputs are given to the group so that they are able to get started on projects that interest them. We then support them week after week to get them the results they want.

We have different ranges of abilities from children who have never coded through to older children who are taking computer science at GCSE.

There is a wide range of skills that the Mentors can help your child develop:

Basic text-based adventure games in Python, using basic If statements and functions.
Basic drawing and games using curses

Experimenting with the Raspberry Pi to:
Light LEDs
Print using a thermal printer
Control a robotic arm

Using the new Micro-bits to code flashing LEDs and make use of the accelerometer.

Basic HTML and CSS and JavaScript

Q Is Horsham Coder Dojo on every week?

Horsham Coder Dojo tries to run every week during term times but some weeks there are not enough mentors available to run the dojo.

Check their website to see when the next dojo is on.

If you are able to help out as a mentor then please contact Horsham Coder Dojo using the form on this page or via their website.

Q Where Is Horsham Coder Dojo?

Tanbridge House School kindly offer up their Learning Resource Centre (LRC) for Horsham Coder Dojo to use.

Check the map on this page for details of the exact location.

Q Do I need to book a place?

Nope! Just turn up one session! Horsham Coder Dojo recommends you check the homepage of their site before leaving the house to make sure the dojo hasn't been cancelled.

Also, sign up to their mailing list on the contact us page of their website to get an e-mail notification of any cancellation and other important information.

Python

etc.

Q Do I have to bring a laptop / computer?

No – but it can be useful for students to be able to carry on with projects at home.

There are a number of laptops available that can be used by students who do not have their own.

Q What happens during a Horsham Coder Dojo session?

Students log in to the register, get projects loaded and say hello to the others (30 mins)

A fun Kahoot quiz is run to learn and reinforce basic coding concepts. This is most students favourite part of the session. Nobody knows if you’re not doing well so it’s really great fun. (20 mins)

Students join a group input and learn to code a project or work on their own thing (1 hour 45mins)

Show and tell of what students have produced that day (20mins)
